The impact of Apartheid Legislation on sport extended beyond the confines of participation and ensured that divisions ran deep where even spectators were not allowed to intermingle or use the same facilities and were given seperate entry and exit points at sports grounds.

The all-white sport was well funded and given international recognition while Black sports were not recognised and not funded by government or sponsors. Sports were kept alive in the townships by talented players, super administrators and supported by the communities they entertained.

This struggle for survival produced sporting role models in sharp tongued opinion-makers who played a pivotal role in exposing the international community to the situation in South Africa and sport was used in the fight for its freedom.

Sport has a positive impact on health and production levels, reducing absenteeism. Many illnesses depend on physical activity to be controlled. Sport presents our youth with life skills and leadership skills. Perhaps the most important of all is the role of sport in fostering national unity. South Africa's new dawn sees sport as the beacon of hope in uniting a polarised nation. We have witnessed that an act of sport, with a touch of Madiba Magic, brought tears of delight to over 40 million people on winning the Rugby World Cup and many times more with successes and progress in all sporting codes.
